The Home Of Champions: Augusta National Golf Club
from:The Augusta National Golf Club is home to one of the most famous golf courses in the entire world, and hosts the major golfing event the Masters each year. Located in Augusta, Georgia, it is seen as one of the best and most challenging course in many ways by American fans, and a true test of a player’s golfing skill. The course is also one of the most beautiful around, with each hole being named after the flowers and plants that bloom in spring during the Masters tournament. With its amazing features and packed history, the Augusta National Golf Club truly is a home of champions. Here are some more facts and figures about this world-renowned golfing masterpiece.
The course
The course at Augusta National Golf Club is one of the most interesting courses around, although changes over the last few years have lessened its appeal somewhat from the original design. Each hole is named after a particular tree or shrub from the area, such as Tea Olive (Hole 1) and Magnolia (Hole 5). Unlike all other courses in the USA Augusta has never been rated, perhaps because of its innovative design. The most famous holes are the 11th, 12th and 13th where some key actions have taken place in the past. These holes are often referred to as ‘Amen Corner’ and often represent the turning points or decisive moments in a Masters tournament.
Club membership
Membership of the Augusta National Golf Club is extremely limited and prestigious, with membership by invitation only. Apart from winners of the tournament, members include Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. There are around 300 members at any one time, and the cost is around $25,000 to $50,000. All members are given a green jacket that can only be worn on the premises. Winners of the Masters tournaments are also given a green jacket, which they can wear outside of the grounds for the year of their win. Afterwards, all jackets are kept in the club. The club has been criticised because it does not allow women to be members, although they are allowed to come as guests of other members. Pressures regarding this topic were so strong in 2003 that the Masters tournament ran without adverts during 2003 and 2004 due to pressure on the corporate sponsors to not endorse the club.
Despite some criticism and controversy, Augusta National Golf Club remains one of the jewels in the crown of American golf. It is the home of the Masters, one of the top tournaments in the world, and an innovative and beautiful course. If you want to see the home of champions, then visit Augusta National Golf Club and see the best of the best play in the Masters.
